Hollywood and African History

Invictus came out this Friday but I am yet to see it. However, according to New York Times, it is “a movie that hits you squarely with its visceral impact and stays in your mind for a long time after.”1 In other words, it is a movie worth watching. I am yet to see the movie so I will side with the critics and assume that it’s a must see at least for the American audience. However, the South Africans are seeing it differently. In their view, casting international/American stars to tell South African history without consulting South Africans, “compromises and distorts national identity.” I think this a legitimate accusation to make, however I think it is wrong to assume that Hollywood has an interest in telling African history or history of any other foreign country so to speak. Hollywood tells a story when it believes it is going to profit from the venture. Therefore, no matter what the story is, the focus is the American audience and American audience loves American stars. If we are that worried about the distortion of our history, I think it is high time we started telling our own stories using the resources we have. Otherwise, Hollywood and Western media in general are going to keep telling our stories and writing them in the way they see fit.

Africa in western media

In Uganda, he helped bring the simplest of things — clean drinking water and a bit of hope — to thousands who often saw sunrise as just one more dawn in a country where death can seem as common as drawing a breath.

This is a short excerpt from a long story on the life of the late Ben Sklaver I found browsing Times! It is sad story and may the Almighty comfort those left behind. However, I have a problem with this story. Not the content but the presentation. The African continent has a lot of problems but it also a lot achievements. Therefore it is sad to see that the chosen and widely accepted representation of many countries on the continent is as in the above quote. And it is even sadder that rarely are these representation questioned. To be honest one can say that Chicago and New York have a lot of crime but I think it will be a different matter if we if we declared that dying in New York or Chicago is synonymous to breathing. And an act of charity can always be understood without exagarating the hopelessness of where it was carried out.

The military will lead efforts in understanding Africa

I came across this article and seriously I have problems with anyone who believes what the US army Knowledge Center will do for Africa. US military involvement both overtly and covertly have a history of making matters worse rather than finding long and lasting solutions. Two examples I can quickly point out are Angola and Congo-Kinshasa. The history of post colonial Congo-Kinshasa  is a good example of US foreign policy toward Africa past and present. Many of us believed Obama will reverse this history of disruptive relations. However,  the military budget of 2009-2010, shows little divergence from the previous administration’s policies toward Africa. It will be interesting to see how knowledge developed by these military academics will play out in the long term development of the continent and the relations with the west.

Summer is here…,

The school semester is over and now I have to look at some projects I could not pursue during the semester. The following is the list I have in mind and post the progress on this page:

The last project is for a class and will probably evolve beyond implementation into application. I will put all the progress on this page and welcome all comments and suggestions.
